The university started out as Sheffield School of Design in 1843 as Sheffield became the centre for steel, tool, and cutlery making. It was then renamed Sheffield School of Art in 1850. The first 90 students were admitted to Sheffield City College of Education on Collegiate Crescent in 1905 before the collegiate hall was requisitioned by the War Office during WWI.
