The City Campus is located in the city centre right next to Sheffield railway station while the Collegiate Crescent Campus is located on Ecclesall Road in south-west Sheffield. The university started out as Sheffield School of Design in 1843 as Sheffield became the centre for steel, tool, and cutlery making. It was then renamed Sheffield School of Art in 1850. The Owen Building was then constructed in a 1960s design, and two years later, the city's College of Technology and the Sheffield School of Design merged to form Sheffield Polytechnic.
In 1976, Sheffield Polytechnic went on to merge with two teacher training colleges, Sheffield City College and Totley Hall College and was renamed Sheffield City Polytechnic. It later became a founding member of the Northern Consortium. Finally, in 1992, Sheffield City Polytechnic was granted the rights to award its own degrees and became Sheffield Hallam University (SHU).
