The Princeton Review’s Best 392 Colleges for 2027 identifies the US colleges with the happiest students, highlighting how friendships, supportive professors, campus activities, and a sense of belonging contribute to a positive university experience. Vanderbilt University ranks first, followed by the University of San Diego and Denison University. Student happiness matters as much as academic reputation, as students who feel supported and connected may experience better well-being, stronger engagement, and improved academic performance. Several factors contribute to student happiness, including active student organisations, mental health services, academic and career guidance, alumni support, university traditions, and convenient locations close to city centres and local amenities. The eleven colleges featured in the rankings offer different approaches to student life, including:

1st Vanderbilt University, Tennessee: Located in Nashville, Vanderbilt combines academic opportunities with an active campus community. The University of Hertfordshire has opened the first medical school in Hatfield. The school welcomes its students to take a five-year bachelor's degree. It aims to recruit up to 70 international students a year. Students in the first intake have travelled from countries such as Australia, Canada, the USA, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, and Zimbabwe. The medical school opened a year earlier than planned to help address the doctor shortage in the East of England. According to one of the university's heads of medicine, the region has 2.5 doctors per 1,000 people, compared with 3.2 across England, leaving a shortage of around 4,500 doctors. One student is a 56-year-old who has been trying to get into medical school for 20 years after a career in pain medicine, rehabilitation and anaesthetics. She also added that she’s interested in public health and pandemic response. Students will gain practical experience from their first year through clinical simulations, hospital placements, and training at local GP practices. Placements will include Watford General Hospital and the Lister Hospital in Stevenage. Several students said the university's hands-on teaching approach and welcoming campus attracted them to the programme. The university also hopes to welcome UK-funded medical students in future years as national allocations become available, helping train doctors to serve communities across Hertfordshire.

Soon, Sri Lankan students may have a new way to earn an Australian degree without leaving their country. As demand for international degrees grows and competition for limited public university places intensifies, more Australian universities are aiming to deliver qualifications locally. In that light, Charles Sturt University has announced plans to open a campus in Colombo, becoming the third Australian university to establish a physical presence in Sri Lanka. This development comes at a time when studying abroad is increasingly expensive, making local access to international programmes more appealing than ever. The expansion is part of a broader rise in transnational education (TNE), in which universities offer internationally recognised programs outside their home countries through branch campuses or academic partnerships. For Sri Lankan students, TNE represents an opportunity to reshape access to global education as we know it. All without the high cost of moving overseas. In short, Charles Sturt provides a practical and accessible route to international higher education for Sri Lankan students. This ongoing expansion also signals a shift in global higher education delivery, creating new pathways for many students to pursue international degrees. As domestic capacity continues to lag behind demand, Australian campuses are set to become an increasingly attractive pathway for students seeking internationally recognised degrees without leaving their country.

The next crisis in international student mobility isn't visas. It's beds. The headlines are obsessed with visa caps, but the real crisis is much more grounded: international students simply have nowhere to sleep. While everyone is busy tracking Canada’s permit cuts or Australia’s tightening requirements, a massive structural gap is widening. We’re looking at 8.5 million mobile students by the end of the decade, yet in places like France and Portugal, the student-to-bed ratio is a staggering 10: 1. The math doesn't add up, and the consequences are starting to bite. On paper, Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) was the "it" asset of 2025. It’s reliable, occupancy is historically high, and investors are piling in. But there’s a strange disconnect: in the markets where the most capital is flowing, the housing shortage is actually getting worse. Take the UK. While occupancy used to be a sure bet, it dipped to 85.4% recently. It's not that there are suddenly too many beds; it’s that we’ve built the wrong beds. For a decade, the industry built for one specific profile: the high-spending student, mostly from East Asia, looking for a premium studio. But the map has shifted. Previously, the market was focused on high-spend profiles and luxury studios in the "Big Three" (UK, Canada, Australia). Now, students from South Asia, Africa, and Latin America are moving toward continental Europe, Ireland, and emerging hubs in the Gulf. Capital is still following the old map, but students have already moved on. These new cohorts have different budgets and different needs. If you're building luxury studios for a market that needs affordable shared housing, you're missing the mark. This isn’t just a problem for real estate developers; it’s a threat to the entire education ecosystem. For universities, housing is no longer an "extra"; it's a recruitment tool. If a student can’t find a bed, they won't enrol. For agents, a student who ends up in substandard or overpriced housing becomes a negative review that can tank a recruiter's reputation in a community. For operators, the question isn't just about supply anymore. It’s about whether your product actually fits the person walking through the door. Visa policies make for great clickbait, but a student with a visa and no roof over their head isn't a success story. The next decade won't be won by those who just "get students in", but by those who ensure they have a place to stay once they arrive. The bed problem is solvable, but only if we stop treating it as an afterthought and start seeing it as the strategic crisis it actually is.

The Student Housing Crisis Nobody Is Talking About

A global student accommodation shortage is emerging as the biggest threat to international student mobility. Explore the challenges facing students, universities, and housing providers.

From 2027, the UK is expected to rejoin Erasmus+, the EU’s flagship education and mobility programme, reopening funded opportunities for students, researchers, staff, and apprentices to study, train, and gain work experience across Europe. The programme is more than a traditional exchange scheme. Alongside student mobility, Erasmus+ supports research collaboration, partnerships, and international projects that, in some cases, extend beyond Europe. For UK students, this means international recognition and experience, minus the high cost of relocating permanently overseas. Back in 2020, the UK left the original Erasmus programme following Brexit and introduced domestic alternatives, such as the Turing Scheme and, in Wales, Taith. Both schemes are expected to continue running alongside Erasmus+ for at least the 2026/27 academic year, creating a period of overlap as the UK re-establishes its participation in Erasmus+. Under the current framework, UK institutions will be able to bid into a funding pot of approximately €1 billion held by the European Commission. Sector representatives have stressed that the programme’s success in the UK will depend on how effectively universities utilise this funding. It’s worth noting that EU students who previously studied at UK universities helped strengthen peer learning and intercultural understanding. They also encouraged domestic students to study languages and raised awareness of the benefits of studying abroad. However, sector leaders have raised concerns that declining numbers of language students in the UK could reduce demand for European exchanges. Therefore, promoting the value of Erasmus+ will be key to maximising participation. Strong engagement in 2027 could further strengthen the case for expanding the next iteration of Erasmus+, with discussions already pointing toward a possible €40 billion budget in the following cycle. In light of this, European partners, including representatives from Germany and the Netherlands, have already begun organising matchmaking events to help universities rebuild partnerships and deepen collaboration. This underscores the importance for UK institutions to move quickly and take full advantage of the opportunity. For students watching closely, 2027 could mark the beginning of a renewed chapter in UK–Europe study opportunities.

Erasmus+ returns in 2027 as the UK prepares to rejoin the EU mobility programme, offering funded study and exchange opportunities across Europe.

Erasmus+ Returns: UK Students Can Study Abroad Again in 2027

Although the UK, the USA, Australia, and Canada have long been the top destinations for international students, recent trends show other countries are emerging as attractive alternatives. By 2030, around 8.5 million international students are expected to study abroad, seeking top universities for quality education and career preparation. In the past year, several countries have updated their international student policies, adjusting enrolment caps and expanding global campus networks. Germany currently hosts around 420,000 international students. Germany’s growing popularity is largely due to its tuition-free universities, English-taught programmes, and strong focus on skills-based education. South Korea has become a major destination for international students, reaching its goal of 300,000 students two years early. Growing interest in Korean culture and the increasing number of English-taught courses are attracting many American students. A survey indicates that 90% of these students wish to stay in South Korea after graduation. France is becoming a leading alternative to the US, hosting nearly 445,000 international students in the 2024/25 academic year. The country has ambitious growth plans, aiming to welcome 500,000 students by 2027. Top business schools have introduced fast-track applications and extended deadlines for students who were originally planning to study in the US. Malaysia is becoming a study destination in Southeast Asia and aims to host 250,000 international students by 2030. With rising interest in countries such as Egypt, India, Indonesia and Japan. The country boasts a developed transnational education model, focusing on energy transition, health, artificial intelligence, and data science. Japan had 336,708 international students in May 2024 and aims to reach 400,000 by 2033. It also launched a new program to attract international researchers, providing financial support to be shared across 11 universities over the next three years to help recruit global talent. China is now working to become a major global education hub. Its strategy focuses on opening joint university campuses and creating international research partnerships. Over the last two years, China has increased its focus on academic exchanges and global cooperation. Kazakhstan is the most surprising entry on the 2025 list of top study destinations. Over 35,000 international students are enrolled there this academic year. Kazakhstan is becoming a popular, stable alternative for those who might have considered studying in Russia. Spain currently hosts over 100,000 international students. The government launched the EduBridge to Spain programme to fast-track applications for talented students. Also, students can work up to 30 hours per week while studying. In summary, many countries are updating their education and visa policies to attract more international students and promote student exchange programmes.

Recently released data by the Korean Educational Development Institute reveals that South Korea achieved its goal of hosting 200,000 foreign students by 2023. The country had set this target in 2015, and the 205,167 international students enrolled by March 2023 surpassed it. The number of foreign students increased by almost 10% from 2021, with 166,892 students studying in Korean institutions in April 2022. This rebound was significant since the borders were closed during the COVID pandemic. The surge in numbers was attributed to Korea's robust international education sector, which rapidly bounced back and surpassed pre-pandemic figures. As a result, the Ministry of Education announced the launch of a new international student support division that aims to ease visa restrictions and partner with universities to create new programmes for foreign students. The surge in Vietnamese students was mainly due to Korean investment in Vietnam, with some major corporations making bases in the country and universities in Korea collaborating with universities in Vietnam. However, experts warn that the growth of the Vietnamese student market raises concerns about illegal immigration and calls for South Korea to diversify its recruitment strategies.A team leader from the State University of New York’s Korea Campus, Kyuseok Kim, explained that these countries are primarily responsible for the increase in certificate mobility among language programme students. KEDI's data encompasses international students in higher education institutions, both graduate and undergraduate, non-degree programmes, and language courses. Hanyang University was the most successful in attracting international students, with 6,999 overseas students attending in 2022. Kyung Hee University followed closely with 6,912 international students, Sungkyunkwan University with 6,676, Yonsei University with 5,926, and Korea University with 4,739. Seoul National University, the top-ranked university in Korea, was missing from the top five, but all five institutions are located in Seoul.Out of the top ten universities with the most international students, only one is located outside of Seoul: Gacheon University in Seognam, which hosted 3,057 international students in 2022. Kim noted that this underscores the necessity for more partnerships and MoUs for universities outside the capital, a trend already underway. Nonetheless, the rapid growth in numbers is encouraging."Over the past two decades, there has been a consistent rise in the enrollment of international students in South Korean HEIs," Kim stated."The number had grown considerably since 2003, when only 12,314 students were enrolled. The impressive expansion is attributed to the increased understanding of the necessity of globalising higher education, which has, in turn, captured the attention of Korean HEIs."

South Korea Hits 2015 Goal, 200,000 Int'l Students

The Korean Educational Development Institute reveals that South Korea achieved its goal of hosting 200,000 foreign students by 2023.

There are over 25,000 student visa requests at the German consulate in India for the upcoming two semesters. The number of Indian students in Germany has "exploded" in recent years, according to Ambassador Philipp Ackerman, who spoke on a panel at the Acumen Global Gateway Summit on April 20.“[Germany is] the new kid on the block because this number has exploded over the last couple of years and we have now 35,000 Indian students in Germany,” he said. The 2023 Wissenschaft weltoffen, published in March, stated that the European country was hosting 33,753 Indian students, accounting for 9.7% of the overall international cohort of 349,438 in 2021/22.With 40,055 students enrolled across Germany's higher education ecosystem, China remains the largest source country for international students. The ambassador added, “What is more is that the German embassy has 25,000 new applications [from Indians] for the next two semesters on its table.”“There is a huge interest in the Indian youth to come to Germany,” he said, noting that free education and English-medium programmes – that offer both academic and practical options – add to the attraction.“We don’t do recruitment. There is no publicity done by German institutions, mostly due to the fact that German universities are state run and owned. There is no business interests there.”However, he continued, the embassy is overwhelmed with applications, and fraud continues to slow down processing.“We are overwhelmed by the number of applications. To process 25,000 applications in a year is tough for us. So we feel also a certain frustration that our proceedings – because we have to get to an academic assessment – and unfortunately, we have about 5 to 10% fraudulent applications and we have to get them out of the basket.“It’s not much, but we have to do that and therefore the proceedings are taking some time.”It's not the first time that visa applications have caused problems. In 2020, stakeholders claimed that visa wait periods were "discouraging and demotivating," with students in India, Morocco, and Cameroon having to wait up to a year.It is unclear whether the large amount of applications in India will be equally challenging this year. Ambassador Ackerman further stated that hosting overseas students from India is a "win-win situation" for both Indian students and German society as a whole. He added, “German universities are super happy with Indian students. Their experience with Indian students is extremely positive. Therefore, Indian applications are considered to be very valuable and accepted very easily… You have 12 months to look for a job [after graduation], and I will tell you that in six weeks every Indian student gets a job in Germany.”.“What we want is Indian students coming to Germany and then also staying. We feel that when we offer to give them education, it plays out for us when they go into the workforce…“Basically this is a win-win situation for both sides – for us and Indian students who stay on in Germany, working in Germany is a big relief in a context where we have a shortage of people.”

25,000 Indian student visa applications are received in Germany.

The number of Indian students in Germany has "exploded" in recent years, according to Ambassador Philipp Ackerman.

A Flemish Belgian city, Ghent, has been announced as the winner of the Erasmus Destination of the Year 2023 after being voted for by representatives of the student network involved in the scheme, among other stakeholders. Ghent beat out other leading cities, including Padua in Italy, Toulouse in France, Valencia in Spain, and Vienna, Austria’s capital. This accolade recognises the city's success in promoting student mobility, its commitment to supporting the Erasmus programme, and its innovative approaches to enhancing student experiences. Yasmine Collier, a local representative of Erasmus Student Network Gent, expressed her excitement and gratitude for winning the Erasmus Destination of the Year 2023 award, acknowledging that it motivates them to improve their mobility support continuously. ESN Gent was founded during the early years of the Erasmus scheme, and the city initially had only 33 students in its mobility programme. Ghent has been gaining popularity in the tourism sector because of its proximity to the capital and as a university town that hosts four university colleges and two universities. The Destination of the Year initiative aims to showcase the best practices in supporting student mobility at the city level, highlighting the efforts of local student associations like ESN Gent in making their cities better mobility destinations. The decision-making process for selecting the winner involved considering factors such as collaboration with key HEIs, correspondence with the city, and ensuring high-quality student mobility. Nikolina Đurić, a board member at ESN International, expressed her excitement about how this initiative can inspire new practices among stakeholders involved in student mobility. She commented that the Destination of the Year award is an opportunity for them to celebrate the hard work that has been done in creating a more diverse and inclusive global student community. The decision to name Ghent as the destination of the year for 2023 was made during ESN's Generation Meeting in Bucharest, Romania, in April. Although the decision was not solely based on a student vote, it was made by representatives from the European Commission, EAIE, the Academic Cooperation Association, the Youth Forum, and the European Students’ Union.

Greystar, one of Europe’s leading real estate companies, has recently purchased a site in Wembley as part of their Pan-European fund, GEPE, for an undisclosed sum. Greystar’s new building is set to be completed and operational in September 2023 and has benefited from the 770-bed PBSA scheme's permission. The site was initially acquired by Quintain, which received planning approval in December 2022; this was part of a programme set to regenerate Wembley Park. The building is set to be a 20-story building and will include many facilities and services to provide you with a unique and memorable stay. The facilities include two lounges to socialise and catch up with friends, private dining areas to enjoy excellent meals, a gym to keep fit, a screen room to watch your favourite movies and TV shows, podiums, and a games area to enjoy fun times with friends. For a calm study session, the property also provides study areas. The property also has multiple social spaces, cycle storage spaces, and external gardens, ideal for spending time outside when the weather’s nice.Greystar’s brand Canvas will manage the property, adding to its 283-bed portfolio. This building scheme has been designed to follow the BREEAM Excellence rating, the quality assurance rating given to new non-domestic properties in the UK.
Why the Focus on London?
London is the UK’s busiest student accommodation city, with the highest demand, leading to a shortfall of 178,000 beds in student housing. Greystar’s acquisition of the Wembley Park site is an essential step towards developing the city’s PBSA, or purposely built student accommodation sector.
Surrounding Area to the Building
The property will be set in the North East Lands development, near the seven-acre Union Park. The site will be part of a 12-acre district in the established neighbourhood of Wembley Park. From the property, you can reach the nearby Wembley Stadium and Wembley Park, which are a four-minute walk from the property. The property is near the metro lines Jubilee and Metropolitan, which will take you to Central London and its various university campuses.
About Greystar
Greystar is one of the leaders in investing in the PBSA industry in Europe, focusing on London due to its shortage of student accommodation and having 120,000 student beds globally. The company entered the UK market in 2013, owned the successful Chapter Living brand, and started its other brand, Canvas, in 2021. Greystar also owned part of IQ until 2020 and acquired the UK’s third-largest student housing provider, Student Roost, in December 2022.London is not just one of Greystar’s prime focuses due to its PBSA shortage but also due to it being among the world’s biggest markets, its world-class education, which attracts thousands of students both domestically and internationally, and the city’s diversity and rich culture.Greystar’s new Wembley Park expansion is a new addition to the company’s presence in the northwest of London, with one of their PBSAs in the area being Canvas Wembley.

A new survey has been conducted to assess perceptions of the international student experience among professionals and students, with the aim of enhancing operations at universities in the United States. Interstride, a student support platform, partnered with the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals (NAGAP) to expand on research that was previously published last fall about using technology to address gaps in international admissions. The results of the survey were unveiled at the NAGAP GEM Summit held in New York City last month. The survey revealed that many international students face challenges in financing their studies, obtaining visas, and choosing the right institution. The survey also showed that many graduate enrollment management (GEM) professionals underestimate the challenges faced by international students, such as finding the right fit between institution and programme. Recommendations from the publication included prioritising international students’ admissions experiences and delegating staff to be responsible for the entire spectrum of the student journey.According to Interstride, universities should create a comprehensive view of international students' education journey, from before their application to their educational and career experiences and life after graduation. Although international graduate students and GEM professionals had some similar perceptions of the admissions journey, they differed significantly in some areas. The discrepancies between their views present an opportunity for universities and professionals to reevaluate their strategies and action plans and align them better with international students' priorities. Harvard's Deland suggested that professionals should work together, speak with students about career outcomes, and acknowledge that no single person has all the information about every opportunity or service. She emphasised the importance of collaboration to make the admissions process more manageable and less stressful for students.

The construction of a 24-storey tower in Elephant and Castle has received approval from the London borough of Southwark. The tower was designed by Maccreanor Lavington Architects and developed by Alumno.Besides regenerating a constrained brownfield site, the tower will offer 244 student rooms and a number of public areas.Furthermore, the railway arches at the site will be rebuilt to provide 67 square metres of commercial space for local businesses.Gerard Maccreanor, the director of Maccreanor Lavington, said: “Despite the constrained site, the development will play a part in activating the Low Line, the new walking destination running the length of the Victorian rail viaducts that span Bankside, London Bridge, and Bermondsey.“Its aim is to provide an engaging and well-lit public space along the ground floor level—a lively alleyway reminiscent of the fascinating hidden and unexpected passages of London.”Artwork commissioned by Southwark-based artists that reflects the history of the area will be featured on the property.Over £11 million will also be contributed to the area's affordable housing.Southwark's planning officer described the tower as a “carefully conceived scheme that will provide an engaging building of an appropriate urban character.”“We're delighted to have been given the go-ahead to develop this project on the corner of Southwark's Rockingham Street and Tiverton Street, next to the railway viaduct,” said David Campbell, Managing Director of Alumno.“It will help meet the demand for student accommodation in the area while freeing up housing for local people. We're looking forward to working in the borough again to provide a building of the highest quality.“I would also like to thank our partners in this project, Melrose Capital, for their ongoing support.”Alumno has collaborated with Southwark Council on various PBSA projects, including Bermondsey Spa, which opened to students in September of last year.
