The Princeton Review’s Best 392 Colleges for 2027 identifies the US colleges with the happiest students, highlighting how friendships, supportive professors, campus activities, and a sense of belonging contribute to a positive university experience.

Vanderbilt University ranks first, followed by the University of San Diego and Denison University. Student happiness matters as much as academic reputation, as students who feel supported and connected may experience better well-being, stronger engagement, and improved academic performance.

Several factors contribute to student happiness, including active student organisations, mental health services, academic and career guidance, alumni support, university traditions, and convenient locations close to city centres and local amenities.

The eleven colleges featured in the rankings offer different approaches to student life, including:

  • 1st Vanderbilt University, Tennessee: Located in Nashville, Vanderbilt combines academic opportunities with an active campus community. Its residential college system helps students build friendships, while student organisations, sporting events, community service, and Nashville’s music and cultural attractions provide opportunities outside the classroom.

  • 2nd University of San Diego, California: Recognised for its sunny climate, beautiful architecture, and 180-acre campus overlooking San Diego and Mission Bay. It ranks first for best quality of life and most beautiful campus. Students can also participate in athletics, volunteering, residential communities, research, internships, and study abroad programmes.

  • 3rd Denison University, Ohio: Focuses on small classes and meaningful relationships between students, professors, staff, and alumni. It ranks sixth for best quality of life and ninth for colleges whose students love them.

  • 4th Taylor University, Indiana: A Christian university known for its close-knit community, student-focused learning, and campus life. Nearly 97% of graduates reportedly say they would choose the university again. It also ranks 13th for best quality of life and 3rd for friendliest students.

  • 5th St. John’s College, Maryland: Offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate curriculum centred on influential works in philosophy, literature, mathematics, and science. Its seminar-based teaching encourages discussion, independent thinking, and close student relationships.

Choosing a university involves more than comparing academic rankings. Students should consider the complete university experience, including academic quality, supportive relationships, campus facilities, affordability, and opportunities for personal and professional development.
