Why Study at SOAS University of London

SOAS University of London is a public research university located in Bloomsbury, London, UK, and it’s a constituent college of the federal University of London. It was established in 1916 first as the School of Oriental Studies then took its current name in 1938. SOAS in considered the leading Higher Education institution in all of Europe that specializes in the study of Africa, Asia, and the Near and Middle East and continues to hold its position to this day. The university’s library was established in 1973 and holds more than 1.5 million items in these national resource houses. SOAS teaching has continuously been awarded high grades by the Quality Assessment Agency. 

Departments and Divisions 

SOAS has a number of 350 undergraduate Bachelor's Degree combinations, almost 200 intensively taught Master’s, M Phil, and PhD research degree programmes available in every academic department. The university also offers a wide variety of non-degree programmes such as language courses, foundation courses, Exchange and Erasmus programmes, and JYA. The school is academically divided into five schools, five centres, and 10 departments. 

Schools, Departments, and Sections include Anthropology and Sociology, Arts, Development Studies, East Asian Languages & Cultures, Economics, Finance & Management, History, Religions and Philosophies, Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, Law, and Politics and International Studies. The Arts school includes English Studies, History of Art and Archaeology, and Music while the East Asian Languages & Cultures school includes studies of China and Inner Asia as well as Japan and Korea. The Languages, Cultures and Linguistics school has departments focusing on Africa, Linguistics, Near and Middle East, South Asia, and SouthEast Asia. As for the school of Law, it includes Gender Studies and Global Media and Communications. 

The Foundation and Language Courses include Foundation Years, International Foundation Courses and English Language Studies, and Language Centre. The Institutes and Regional Centres include African Studies, Contemporary Central Asia and the Caucasus, the Japan Research Centre, Korean Studies, the SOAS China Institute, the SOAS Middle East Institute which includes Iranian Studies and Palestine Studies, the SOAS Shapoorji Pallonji Institute of Zoroastrian Studies (SSPIZS), the SOAS South Asia Institute which includes Pakistan, the SOAS World Languages Institute, and South East Asian Studies. 

Research Centres are within Departments and Schools and they include Asian Legal Studies, Buddhist Studies, Colonialism, Empire and International Law, Comparative Political Thought, Conflict, Rights and Justice, Creative Industries, Media and Screen Studies, Cultural, Literary and Postcolonial Studies, Development Policy and Research, and many more. Finally, the Collaborative External Centres which are jointly established with an external institution include Chouettefilms, Document - The SOAS multimedia journal of research. , European Association of Israel Studies, Global Council on Anthropological Linguistics , Index Islamicus, Japanese Art in the Sainsbury Institute, and more. 

Facilities and Resources 

SOAS has superb facilities, both practical and scholarly, even though it’s considered a somewhat small higher-education institution. These facilities are the Brunei Gallery which provides a 40-room conference venue at central London locations that are all run by the SOAS Conference Office, the SOAS Library which includes over 1.5 million items available in more than 400 languages and is considered a collection of national importance. There is also a huge network of electronic resources and archival holdings and eight Regional Centres which run programmes of workshops, seminars, and conferences as well as coordinate regional expertise.

There are six halls of residence which are Dinwiddy House, Goldsmiths House, Helen Graham House, Paul Robeson House, Urbanest St Pancras, and Wood Green Hall.

A wide range of SOAS student accommodation is offered for students with disabilities whether undergraduates or postgraduates. Students with disabilities are given priority for a space in the university’s halls of residence. Students should contact SOAS’s Disability & Neurodiversity Team first and provide them with information about the details of their preferred hall of residence or any other requirements, if a hall visit is required, evidence of their disability, and their completed confidentiality agreement. Most of SOAS’s halls of residence are wheelchair accessible and include specially adapted rooms.

A lot of SOAS student accommodation options are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate students coming to SOAS with their families or partners.
