Why Study at Birkbeck, University of London

Sir George Birkbeck, a medical doctor and graduate of Edinburgh University and early advocate of adult education, founded the "Mechanical Institute of London" in 1823 in the Crown and Anchor Tavern. There were almost 2,000 people in attendance and as a result, the idea was not regarded, and some at Birkbeck were accused of "trying to sow evil seeds."

The Institute relocated into the Chancery Lane Southampton Building two years later, in 1825. Women were allowed for the first time in 1830.
