Sir George Birkbeck, a medical doctor and graduate of Edinburgh University and early advocate of adult education, founded the "Mechanical Institute of London" in 1823 in the Crown and Anchor Tavern. There were almost 2,000 people in attendance and as a result, the idea was not regarded, and some at Birkbeck were accused of "trying to sow evil seeds."
The Institute relocated into the Chancery Lane Southampton Building two years later, in 1825. Women were allowed for the first time in 1830. The University of London's structure transformed in 1858, and the tests for graduation were opened up. The Institute is the country's largest provider of part-time university training.
In 1866, the Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institute was renamed. The title College was eliminated from Birkbeck, the University of London when it was renamed in 2000. Birkbeck College, London University is still the full legal name of the institution. After extensive renovations, Princess Royal, the Chancellor of the University of London, reopened his Malet Street house in 2003.
