History and Background
Liverpool John Moores University is a public research university located in the city of Liverpool. In 1823, the university was established at the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts. This eventually turned into Liverpool Polytechnic. The university’s origins can be traced back to the Industrial Revolution. In 1992, it became one of the new British universities as one of the big businessmen and philanthropists in Liverpool, Sir John Moores, chose the university's name
The John Moores Art Preis was labelled in 1957 as a reward for the UK's best contemporary painting, which reflects his philanthropic and cultural legacy. The university now cooperates in a biennial John Moores Painting Prize (China) competition at Shanghai University with the College of Fine Arts, which offers Chinese artists the opportunity to spend a whole month staying at our Art and Design School in Liverpool.
The eldest son of Sir John Moores Jr, succeeding Henry Cotton, served as the second chancellor of the University between 1994 and 1999. Lady Grantchester, his eldest daughter, was accepted into the university as an honorary fellow in 2015.
Some of the university’s notable alumni include Clare Elizabeth Foy, who is a British actress with various awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, Elizabeth Kimberly Tweddle MBE, who is a retired British artistic gymnast renowned for her uneven bar and floor routines and was the first female gymnast from Great Britain to win a medal at the European Championships, World Championships, and Olympic Games. Tweddle represented Great Britain at three Olympic Games.
