Edinburgh Napier University is a Scottish public university located in Edinburgh. The university's predecessor, Napier Technical College, was established in 1964 and named after 16th-century Scottish mathematician and philosopher John Napier. Lord Douglas-Hamilton designated the technical college as a university in 1992, becoming Napier University. About 19,500 students attend the university, both on and off-campus in Scotland.
The Scottish Borders College of Nursing and Lothian College of Health Studies merged in 1996 to form a single Faculty of Health Studies program.
It was renamed Edinburgh Napier University in February 2009. Edinburgh Napier has received the Queen's Anniversary Award twice. The Queen's Anniversary Prize was previously given to Edinburgh Napier in 2009 for 'Innovative housing construction for environmental value and quality of life.
