Why Study at Leeds Beckett University
A public university in Leeds, West Yorkshire, with two campuses in the city centre and Headingley, Leeds Beckett University traces back all the way to 1824. It all started when Leeds Mechanics Institute was founded then later became the Leeds Institute of Science, Art and Literature until it was once again renamed to Leeds College of Technology in 1927. The college merged with Leeds College of Commerce, part of Leeds College of Artand Yorkshire College of Education and Home Economics in 1927 to form Leeds Polytechnic. Afterwards, James Graham College and the City of Leeds College of Education joined Leeds Polytechnic. It then became one of the founding members of the Northern Consortium. The Polytechnic became Leeds Metropolitan University and gained the right to award its own degrees after the Further and Higher Education Act came into effect in 1992.
In 1998, the university merged with Harrogate College and therefore forming the Harrogate campus until the year 2008 when the college was replaced by Hull college. The university is now partnered with the University of North Florida with a student and faculty exchange programme.
