Why Study at Heriot-Watt University

The journey of establishing Heriot-Watt University starts with James Watt, the father of the industrial revolution, who founded the School of Arts. In 1852, a fund started to buy the school of Arts permanent premises in Adam Square. Back then, the School of Arts changed its name to the Watt Institution and School of Arts for the sake of working-class men. After merging George Heriot’s Trust, the college was renamed Heriot-Watt College in 1885. James Watt was always seeking to transform the world to depend on engineering and technology, recognised in the unit of power: the Watt. In 1769, James Watt added a separate condenser and valves to the existing Newcomen steam engine to enhance its efficiency, which helped accelerate the speed at which Britain industrialised.

The university had its first lecture in 1821 and the subject was Chemistry with 300 students enrolled. More than 700 Mechanics Institutes had been founded 30 years later. Mary Burton who is an active pioneer for society and educational reform led a campaign to convince the Directors of the Watt Institution to allow women students to join the school.  With the campaign’s success, Marry became the first woman on the School's Board of Directors and then a Life Governor of Heriot-Watt University.

After the great effort to the good of the working class and women to join colleges and schools, education became a right, not a privilege and Heriot-Watt University was one of the first academic institutions that contributed to setting the education stone for men and women from different backgrounds to achieve their potential in research and enterprise.
