Glasgow Caledonian University was established in 1971, while Glasgow Polytechnic was established in 1991. Glasgow Caledonian University was founded on April 1, 1993, due to the merging of Queen's College and Glasgow Polytechnic.

The university established Glasgow Caledonian New York College in September 2013, which is an autonomous partner institution with a Wooster Street campus in the city's SoHo neighbourhood.
