History of Durham University

Durham University is a famous public research university in Durham, UK. It was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and incorporated by royal charter in 1837. Ranked #86 in the World Top 100 position in the QS World University Rankings 2021, it is one of the world’s leading universities. Nationally, it was ranked 4th in the Guardian University Guide (2021) and 7th in The Complete University Guide (2021). These rankings reflect the university’s excellence in teaching and research alongside its all-around student experience, which makes Durham graduates highly sought after by employers around the world. Durham’s Archaeologists led the first UK university team ever to be permitted to undertake investigations within Beijing’s Forbidden City, and they discovered an 800-year-old Royal Charter from the reign of King John back in March 2019. Durham is also considered a top university for employability. According to QS Graduate Employability Ranking (2020), it is ranked in the world top 40 for its students’ employability.

Durham University - Famous Alumni

Many notable, famous people graduated from Durham University, including royalties such as Prince Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg; well-known journalists and presenters, such as Gabby Logan, Jeremy Vine, Chris Hollins, Kate Silverton, and Harold Evans; and prominent Rugby Union players, such as Phil de Glanville and Will Greenwood. Lastly, Steven Marshall, the Australian politician serving as the 46th and current Premier of South Australia, also graduated from Durham University. 

Departments, Faculties, and Colleges: 

Durham University consists of 4 main faculties, 17 colleges and 26 departments.  The main four faculties are arts and humanities, business, science, and social science and health. The 17 colleges include Collingwood College, Grey College, Hatfield College, John Snow College, Josephine Butler College, and many more. There are over 200 undergraduate courses in the university and 100 taught postgraduate courses, and many research degrees. 

Durham offers a wide range of undergraduate study areas such as accounting and finance, archaeology, geology and earth sciences, music, and many more as well as three combined honours degrees, giving students the flexibility to choose whichever suits them and their interests. 

There are three types of postgraduate studies, taught courses, research degrees and specialized courses in the International Study Centre. Postgraduate taught courses are one year Masters courses delivered via lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Postgraduate research degrees are 1-3 years (full-time), or two -6 years (part-time). The International Study Centre courses are mainly Pre-Masters programmes that combine modules to increase students’ academic knowledge in their chosen areas, improve their study skills, and help them reach the required English language level, and is taught over two or three terms depending on the English language score.

Undergraduate Durham University Student Accommodation: 

The accommodation cost depends on whether the student’s allocated college is catered or self-catered, and then by the room type the college offers. Different types of accommodation are available across all of the colleges. However, not all room types are available in every college. Most colleges provide a library with study space, laundry facilities, music facilities, a TV room, a bar/cafe, a games room, common rooms, a gym, a sports court, a boathouse, an art room, performance space, and a garden or an outdoor area. All bedrooms are equipped with a bed, a desk and a chair, a wardrobe, a drawer unit, a shared pantry or kitchen facilities, an en-suite or shared bathroom, and internet access. 

Part-time or distance learning students cannot live in university accommodation on a full-time basis. Short-term or temporary accommodation could be available for certain part-time or distance learning students who are their members, although it’s not guaranteed.

Postgraduate Durham University Student Accommodation: 

A selected number of rooms are available for Durham postgraduate student accommodation. To ensure that you’re considered for housing, a college membership with the accommodation must be filled first. The university also offers a small number of couples and family rooms on a first-come, first-served basis and is determined by availability. All postgraduate Durham university student accommodation bedrooms are single occupancy, except for designated family accommodation. 

Off-Campus Student Accommodation in Durham:
