History and Background

Birmingham City University was first founded as the Birmingham College of Arts in 1843. In 1971, it was a polytechnic academic institution, and in 1992, it was granted its Royal Charter as Birmingham City University. 

Why Study at Birmingham City University? 

The university is the second biggest of Birmingham's five universities. Birmingham City University has many foundation programmes as well as undergraduate and postgraduate with internationally recognized courses such as ACCA (Chartered Accountants Association), CIMA (Chartered Accounting Institute) and RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). Through a new set of contemporary and versatile lessons that are suitable for every level, Birmingham City University is a hub for research, academic excellence, and the dissemination of technology and has over 25,000 students from all around the world.  

Birmingham City University is keen on providing its students with advanced skills for their future careers. The university lands on the UK's 7th place for best Employability rate for its graduates. According to 2017 statistics, 97.4% of its graduates get into employment or further study within six months after graduation

Notable Alumni

The university has a great number of distinguished alumni including the Chinese classical piano soloist, Di Xiao, the English novelist and writer, Jim Crace, the blogger and journalist Professor, Paul Bradshaw, and the main presenter of the BBC TV news programme Midlands Today, Mary Rhodes.

Departments and Divisions

Birmingham City University consists of three major campuses serving four faculties with a wide range of specialities and major institutions. In the 2014 Framework for Research Excellence, 90% of the university’s studies have shown that its external effect is "exceptional" or "very significant". The university’s faculties include the Faculty of Health, Education, and Life Sciences comprising of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Health Sciences, School of Defence Healthcare Education, and School of Education and Social Work. 

It also has the Faculty of Computing, Engineering, and the Built Environment which includes the School of Computing and Digital Technology, Computing, Digital Technology, School of Engineering and the Built Environment, Built Environment, and Engineering. Then there is the Faculty of Business, Law and Social Sciences which includes Birmingham City Business School, School of Law, School of Social Sciences

Finally, there is also the Faculty of Arts, Design, and Media which includes Birmingham School of Art, Birmingham School of Architecture and Design, School of Fashion and Textiles, School of Jewellery, School of Visual Communication, Birmingham School of Media, School of English, Birmingham School of Acting, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and School of Games, Film and Animation

It also has wireless internet access for students and staff. The university has students support service with any academic-related inquiries, financial aid, and counselling.

The University offers 7 residence halls with more than 2,500 well-equipped rooms located all over the city.
