Why Study at the University of Oxford
Oxford University is one of the oldest universities in the world. Located in the city of Oxford, England, it is ranked 5th among the world's Best Global Universities. The University has won the admiration of kings and popes for its antiquity, curriculum, doctrine, and privileges. It started establishing academic halls for women in 1878 and allowed them to enrol fully in 1920. Many universities followed in their footsteps and allowed women to enrol. By 1974, five all-male colleges had started allowing women to enrol. Since then, all colleges have changed their status to start admitting both women and men. During the 20th and early 21st centuries, Oxford added a significant new research capacity to its humanistic core in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine.
Departments and Divisions
The university is made up of 39 separate colleges, such as St John's College, Lincoln College, Harris Manchester College, Merton College, Trinity College, as well as many more. These colleges are financially independent and self-governing but still relate to the central university in a federal system. All of them are close to each other and close to the main Oxford campus. The central university (main campus) holds many divisions, including academic and administrative departments such as libraries and museums. There are four academic divisions within Oxford University; all have a full-time divisional head and an elected divisional board. Also, there is the Department for Continuing Education and the University's Gardens, Libraries, and Museums. Oxford University has 100 academic departments superintended by the four main academic divisions: the Humanities Division, Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division, Medical Sciences Division and Social Sciences Division. The university also has smaller research centres and sub-departments. The Department for Continuing Education offers part-time, flexible courses and programs for adult learners.
