Why Study at South Thames College

Founded in 1895, students had to pay what was then a substantial fee of £1 a term for day classes. Around 500 students were studying there, which was considered a large number back then. South Thames College now has over 21,000 students enrolled, and government-funded courses such as BTEC Nationals and A-levels are free for 16-19-year-olds.

The college merged with Merton College, a thriving education institution in South West London, in 2009. 

Departments and Divisions

South Thames College offers a wide range of courses in many areas, such as adult short courses, adult training for work, apprenticeships, foundation learning, and full-time courses.

The courses are in many subject areas: Access to Higher Education which enables you to get back to resume or start higher education; Accounting and Finance certificates and diplomas; Business,  as well as  Art and Design diplomas. Other courses include:

  • The college also offers a Hospitality and Catering course and cooking and baking-related courses such as Baking, Cake Decorating, and Cookery.
  • A hair and beauty salon is present on campus, and the college provides diplomas in Beauty Therapy/Complementary Therapy and Hairdressing as well as health and wellness courses such as counsellingLeisure and Well Being, Health and Social Care, and sports-related sciences such as  Health and Social Care; Sport and Sport Science.
  • A wide range of educational-related and training-related study programs are available, which include Childcare and Early Years, Teaching and Training, and Training for Work.
  • Linguistic studies include English (ESOL/EFL)  and Languages and Writing, Interpreting and Translation.
  • Skill-related programs and apprenticeships include Musical Instrument Making and Repair, Construction, and Plumbing.
  • Computer science and Digital media-related course studies are available, which include Digital Media and Games Design and Development; and Computing and IT.
  • Various art courses are offered, including Fashion; Film, Media, Multimedia; crafts, music, Performing Arts and Production Arts.
  • Humanities programs such as  Law and Legal Secretarial courses.
  • Other courses provided include Customer Service and Public Services, Humanities and Social Sciences, Music,  Travel and Tourism, and more.

Facilities and Resources

South Thames College still has some of the region's most modern and up-to-date facilities, thanks to a £100 million redevelopment of the Wandsworth campus a few years ago. The bright and spacious building, which is built around a central courtyard area and includes science labs, media facilities, a gym, a sports hall, and a large library and cafe, will astound you.

Learning Resources Centre

The Learning Resources Centre's purpose is to support learning. It provides high-quality, accessible resources, including books, e-books, e-resources, journals, magazines and DVDs, well-equipped facilities, a range of study environments designed to support different learners' needs, open access computers, printers, photocopies, Wi-Fi, and a team of qualified and knowledgeable staff available to help students. 

Cafés

The Courtyard café has a wide variety of hot foods, snacks, sandwiches, salads, and drinks to suit a variety of cultures, with special consideration given to those with special dietary requirements. Prices are reasonable, and special offers are frequently available. The Internet Café and Express Café also serve light snacks and beverages. 

Construction Training Centre: 

New workshops and laboratories are designed in collaboration with the construction industry to ensure they meet the highest standards. The college is currently collaborating with the government on a key initiative aimed at greening the construction industry and providing training to residents in the area to help them redevelop their own neighbourhoods. Areas on offer include construction multi-trades, plumbing, electrical, bricklaying, tiling, CSCS cards, and employability skills. 

Creative Industries:

The creative industries' facilities include industry-standard cameras and high-performance Mac editing suites available in the media department, a new 60-seat theatre with a PA system, digital live consoles, and 4K projection for multimedia performances, a 16mm Steenbeck editing suite, an industry-standard mastering suite running Native Instruments & UAD plugins, state-of-the-art music recording studios with BSS network systems and Soundcraft Ghost consoles in four acoustically treated control rooms, Mac editing suites running Logic Pro X 10.5, and synthesis laboratory with a range of synths and Ableton Suite 10. 

Hair and Beauty Salons:

Industry-standard hair and beauty salons, fully equipped with the latest technology, are now available at the college. Students in hair and beauty care for real clients and all South Thames students receive discounted haircuts and beauty treatments.

Sports Hall and Gym: 

You'll be able to train and learn in the best environment possible, as the Sports England standard sports hall is equipped with basketball nets and marked out for sports such as indoor football, badminton, and much more. There's also a newly renovated gym, aerobics area, and locker rooms.
