Kingston University London traces its roots back to 1899, which is the foundation of the Kingston Technical Institute. At that time, it provided courses in electrical wiring, construction and nursing, and chemistry.
Gipsy Hill College for Teacher Training, a forerunner of Kingston University, was established in 1917. The Kingston School of Art broke from the Kingston Technical Institute in 1930, ultimately becoming Kingston College of Art in 1945. Gipsy Hill College transferred to Kingston Hill in 1946. The first Penrhyn Road campus buildings were completed in 1951.
In 1957, the Ministry of Education named Kingston a "Regional College of Technology."
The College of Technology and the College of Art combined in 1970 to become Kingston Polytechnic, which offered 34 main courses, 17 of which were degree-level. Kingston and the Gipsy Hill College of Education combined in 1975, with the College's faculty becoming part of Kingston's Division of Educational Studies.
It was granted the Royal Charter to be an independent university in 1992.
