Why Study at King’s College London?

King's College London is a public research university located in Strand, London, UK, and it’s considered the fourth oldest university in England. Founded in 1829 by a group of churchmen, politicians, and other community members, it’s now one of the top 10 UK universities globally, according to QS World University Rankings 2020. It was also ranked #6 nationally in the “power” ranking in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) and #7 for quality in Times Higher Education rankings.

 It’s in the top seven UK universities for research earnings. KCL has also influenced many advances that shape modern life, such as the discovery of the structure of DNA, research that led to the development of TV, radio, mobile phones, radar, medicine and healthcare, including antiseptic surgery and palliative care. It’s considered the largest centre for the education of healthcare professionals in Europe. Twelve people who have either studied or worked at KCL and its constituent institutions were awarded the Nobel Prize. 

Departments and Divisions

KCL has nine main faculties, and each faculty has a number of departments and schools. The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences is considered one of the world’s centres of excellence for dental and oral education. 

The Faculty of Arts & Humanities includes the Department of Comparative Literature, Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries, Department of Digital Humanities, Department of English, Department of Film Studies, Department of French, Department of German, Department of History, Department of Liberal Arts, Department of Music, Department of Philosophy, Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin American Studies, Department of Theology & Religious Studies, King’s Digital Lab, and the Modern Language Centre. 

The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine includes the School of Basic & Medical Biosciences, the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, the School of Cancer & Pharmaceutical Sciences, the School of Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences, the School of Immunology & Microbial Sciences, the School of Life Course Sciences, and the School of Population Health & Environmental Sciences. 

Moreover, the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences includes the Department of Chemistry, Department of Engineering, Department of Informatics, Department of Mathematics, and Department of Physics. 

As for the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, it is divided into the Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation, the Department of Adult Nursing, the Department of Child & Family Health, the Department of Mental Health Nursing, the Department of Midwifery, and Midwifery & Palliative Care. 

The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience is also divided into the Divisions of Academic Psychiatry, the Division of Neuroscience, and the Division of Psychology & Systems Sciences. 

Finally, the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy includes the International School for Government, the School of Education, Communication & Society, the School of Global Affairs, the School of Politics & Economics, and the School of Security Studies. 

KCL also offers postgraduate studies such as Master’s, research courses, and Doctoral Studies. Postgraduate studies are offered in many subjects and fields such as Comparative Literature, Film Studies, Geography, Engineering, Law, Global Affairs, and many more. It also offers summer and winter programmes such as the Undergraduate Summer School, the Pre-University Summer School, and the Pre-University Winter School. 

Facilities and Resources

KCL provides many services, facilities, and resources to its students, such as sports clubs, societies, campaigning groups, and volunteering opportunities, helping students meet new people, socialise, and make new friends. The university has cafes, bars, and shops as well. It also has two bars on the Strand Campus: The Vault and Philosophy Bar and Guy’s bar on Guy’s Campus. Strand Campus has The Shack café, and Guy’s Campus has The Shed. The Strand Campus also has The Union Shop, where students can buy KCL branded clothes, accessories, gifts, stationery, and special foods. 

King’s College London Accommodation

KCL offers King’s College student accommodation to undergraduate students and postgraduate students, guests and staff accommodation. They provide a safe, service-driven, and inclusive residential environment. All KCL residences have a residence manager and are directly managed or managed by accommodation partners such as Unite and Urbanest. A day-to-day cleaning and maintenance team are always available as well. King’s College student accommodation doesn’t require deposits or a guarantor, and all utility bills are included in the accommodation fees. 

How to Book Your King’s College Student Accommodation?

KCL guarantees King’s College Student Accommodation under the following conditions: you have KCL as your firm choice for a full-time course for the 2021/2022 academic year, you complete all the required steps of booking your accommodation before the deadline, and you haven’t already been offered accommodation for the year of application. 

The steps for booking your King’s College student accommodation are first to register your accommodation interest and mention any additional accommodation requirements if, for example, you have a severe medical condition. Second, wait for an invitation email that will contain a date and time for you to access the accommodation portal to book your room. Third, book your room by selecting room type and budget. The fourth and final step is to sign the contract, then you’ll receive a confirmation email of your license agreement, and that’s it!

King’s College Student Accommodation Residences 

There are various King’s College student accommodation options with various room sizes and facilities you can choose from. You’ll find everything from residence halls, room types, prices, and facilities. 

Moving into King’s College Student Accommodation

KCL advises students to bring some of their room contents like their own bed linen and other bedding essentials, toiletries, laundry detergent, iron, and cooking utensils. Small electrical appliances such as laptops, printers, and small lamps are welcomed to bring as long as they fit the UK electrical system. Microwaves are standard in all kitchens.

Guest and Staff Accommodation

KCL provides short-term accommodation for guests and staff members. The university offers a 20% discount to staff members, and all rooms come with fresh linen, towels, and toiletries. They offer many room types such as single rooms, double rooms, one-bedroom flats, and two-bedroom flats. Facilities are contained or shared kitchens and bathrooms.
