Brighton is a seaside resort in East Sussex, England, and one of the two main areas of the City of Brighton and Hove. Brighton is located 47 miles (76 kilometres) south of London. Settlement in the area can be traced back to the Bronze Age, Roman, and Anglo-Saxon periods, according to archaeological evidence. The Domesday Book mentions the ancient settlement of "Brighthelmstone" (1086). It began to develop as a health resort around 1730.

King George IV spent a lot of time in town and built the Royal Pavilion there. The arrival of the railways in 1841 aided its popularity as a day-trip destination from London.

One of the most fun facts about this city is that Brighton is not the full name of the city! Truth is, Brighton is officially known as the city of Brighton and Hove. Brighton and Hove formed a unitary authority in 1997, and Queen Elizabeth II granted them city status in 2001. Many locals still regard the two as separate towns.
