The History of the University of Manchester 

The University of Manchester was established in 2004 as a result of a merger between Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). It offers distinguished, very advanced, and world-class research and learning levels, which made it a contributor to pushing British Higher Education. The university is among the largest single-site universities in the UK, with one of the biggest student communities.

Why Study at the University of Manchester?

The university’s distinguished alumni contributed to producing more than 20 Nobel laureates since 1906 when former student Joseph Thomson won it for Physics. In fact, 25 Nobel Prize winners have worked or studied there. Additionally, 83% of the university’s research was ranked as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” by the Research Excellence Framework in 2014. It’s ranked 8th in Europe, 5th in the UK, and 36th in the World in the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities. 

University of Manchester Notable Alumni

The University of Manchester has a distinctive, recognizable, and memorable academic history. People who studied at the university and won a Nobel Prize include Joseph John Thomson who won the prize in Physics in 1906 for discovering that cathode rays in electrified gases were composed of “negative corpuscles”, Ernest Rutherford who was awarded the prize in Chemistry in 1908, James Chadwick who was a British physicist who won the Nobel Prize in 1935 for his discovery of the neutron in 1932, and Sir Andre K. Geim who is currently working in England at the University of Manchester in the School of Physics and Astronomy and won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics with Konstantin Novoselov for his work on graphene. 

Faculties

The University of Manchester consists of three faculties: Faculty of Biology, Medicine, and Health; Faculty of Science and Engineering; and Faculty of Humanities. These faculties are divided into a number of schools with strong reputations for teaching and research.

Nobel Prize winner Ernest Rutherford was the one who accomplished the atom split at the University of Manchester in 1917. The university then named its physics lab “The Rutherford Building” after him.
