History and Background

Cardiff University is a public research university located in Cardiff, Wales, UK. It was first known as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire in 1883 when it was founded. It became a founding college of the University of Wales in 1893 then took its current name in 1972. It’s considered the highest-ranked university in Wales with its 34th ranking in The Times & The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021. It tops the league table in Wales and is ranked 30th in The Complete University Guide 2021. The University is also ranked 37th in the Guardian University Guide for 2021, 159th in the QS World University Rankings 2021, 191 in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021, and is among the 150-200 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2020. It is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities and is also ranked 5th in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) based on quality. 

Famous Alumni

Many famous people graduated from Cardiff University such as Member of House of Lords of the United Kingdom, Neil Kinnock, Member of Parliament of the United Kingdom, Wayne David, Former Prime Minister of Jordan, Faisal Al-Fayez, Member of Parliament of the United Kingdom, Kevin Brennan, and Member of House of Lords of the United Kingdom, Glenys Kinnock, Baroness Kinnock of Holyhead. Many journalists also studied at Cardiff University such as Huw Edwards, Martin Lewis, and Emma Crosby as well as a number of TV presenters such as Matt Barbet, Susanna Reid, Siân Lloyd, and Adrian Chiles. 

Departments and Divisions

There are three main colleges in the university and each college has a number of academic schools within. The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences has 10 academic schools which are Business, English, Communication and Philosophy, Geography and Planning, History, Archaeology and Religion, Journalism, Media and Culture, Law and Politics, Modern Languages, Music, Social Sciences, and Welsh. The College of Biomedical and Life Sciences includes seven academic schools which are Biosciences, Dentistry, Healthcare Sciences, Medicine, Optometry and Vision Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Psychology. The College of Physical Sciences and Engineering has seven academic schools as well which are Architecture, Chemistry, Computer Science and Informatics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy. 

The university also offers postgraduate taught courses which include over 200 different programmes to choose from with the option of whether to enrol full-time or part-time. Postgraduate research degrees are also offered with a variety of research programmes. The university has part-time courses for adults in languages, business, humanities, politics and law, computing, science and environment, and social studies as well as short online courses to develop your skills and widen your knowledge on new topics. 

Facilities

The university has a wide range of facilities like libraries, conference facilities, research facilities, and sports facilities. The university’s 16 libraries include over 1.2 million printed books and provide access to more than 375,000 online books and journals. The conference facilities include year-round meeting facilities located in Aberdare Hall, the University Hall, and Cathays Campus. There are also 52 research facilities available in the university. Sports facilities consist of a Fitness and Conditioning Centre which offers three floors of cardio, weights equipment, and resistance, a 33-acre sports field, a Sports Training Village with a wide range of outdoor and indoor sports facilities, and Studio 49 which is a modern dance studio offering a number of fitness classes. 

Cardiff University On-Campus Accommodation

Cardiff University student accommodation is offered to undergraduate students, postgraduate students, students with disabilities or medical conditions, individuals and groups, and couples and families. 

Cardiff University Student Accommodation for Undergraduate & Postgraduate Students:

Cardiff University accommodation is available to undergraduate students with a wide range of facilities that suit every budget and preference. The accommodation can be catered or self-catered and the room types can vary between en-suite, shared bathroom, or studio. The accommodation has other options as well such as alcohol-free living, quiet-living, and options for welsh speakers and learners. All the university’s accommodation has Wi-Fi. 

Cardiff University Student Accommodation for Students with Disabilities or Medical Conditions:

There are a number of Cardiff University halls of residence which are specifically designed for students with disabilities or medical conditions. There are also hearing-impairment facilities as well as wheelchair access. All wheelchair access accommodation offers laundry facilities and all university’s accommodation offer Wi-Fi. Students also have the choice between catered accommodation and self-catered accommodation. 

Cardiff University Student Accommodation for Individuals and Groups:

Cardiff University offers accommodation for individuals and groups who visit the university for leisure or other purposes. Individuals accommodation includes single occupancy rooms with en-suite options or standard with shared bathroom. Facilities include flats having their own kitchen and dining area, crockery, pans, pots and cutlery, ironing board, bed linen, towels, tea/coffee making facilities, free parking (subject to availability), a launderette, iron, adapters, and hair dryers that are available from reception. The university will advise you which residence is more suitable for you depending on your requirements. 

Cardiff University Student Accommodation for Couples and Families:

Couples are offered accommodation options such as studios or one-bedroom flats while families can choose between two or three-bedroom flats or houses. All students living in couples accommodation or family accommodation will have to move out and find alternative accommodation after the first year as the residential period can’t be extended. Priority is given to students coming from overseas for their first year of study. Wi-Fi is provided for spouses, partners, and family members, but only registered students can use the network connection point.
