Why Study at the University of Bath
The University of Bath is a public research university located in Bath, Somerset, United Kingdom. It received its royal charter in 1966 along with a number of other institutions after the Robbins Report. Like the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England, the University of Bath can trace its roots to the Merchant Venturers' Technical College, established in Bristol as a school in 1595 by the Society of Merchant Venturers. The university's main campus is located on Claverton Down, a site overlooking the city of Bath, and was purpose-built, constructed from 1964 in the modernist style of the time.
The University of Bath’s history goes back to the Merchant Venturers' Technical College, a technical school established in Bristol. In 1907, the Bath School of Pharmacy was founded and in 1929 it became part of the Technical College. The Bristol Education Authority took control of the Technical College in 1949; it was renamed the Bristol College of Technology and in 1960 the Bristol College of Science and Technology when it became one of ten technical colleges under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education. In 1963, the Robbins Committee report opened the door for the college to finally be awarded the university status as Bath University of Technology. In September 2018, the university’s current name was born. Later in April 2019, Ian H. White took charge of the university as the new Vice-Chancellor.
