London is one of the UK’s oldest cities, with a rich history going back more than 2000 years, when the city initially started as a Roman camp and received the name Londinium. Today, London is the UK’s most recognisable city as it is the UK’s and England’s capital city, which only became the case after being made so by William the Conqueror in 1066. London falls on the banks of the Thames River and is in the southeast part of England.

London is the most desirable student city for students, ranked first worldwide among other student cities according to QS Rankings in 2023. This position as first worldwide among student cities is thanks to London’s high quality of higher education institutions and systems and high living standards, which make for excellent student life and a memorable study experience.

Some of London’s most famous universities include University College London, King’s College London, Imperial College London, and the University of London; this makes the city desirable for international students, who make up one-third of the total student population of 400,000 university students.
