Why Study at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

 Located in Bloomsbury, Camden, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is a constituent college of the University of London that specialises in public health and tropical medicine. It was founded by Sir Patrick Manson in 1899 after a donation to the Indian Parsi philanthropist B. D. Petit and it is now a high-ranking institution. 


Based on the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise by the Times Higher Education Table of Excellence, the school is ranked in the top three research institutions in the UK. In 2008, it was named the top university in Europe for research impact in all fields, taking the lead from Oxford and Cambridge. According to the 2021 US News Best Global Universities Rankings, the school ranked 3rd in Public, Environmental and Occupational Health, 4th in Infectious Diseases, and 11th in the world for Social Sciences and Public Health.

Departments and Divisions

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is made up of three faculties; Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health, Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, and Faculty of Public Health and Policy. 

The Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health aims to address some of the biggest public health problems in the world. It has 300 academic staff and 150 research students working in more than 20 countries. The faculty includes the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, the Department of Medical Statistics, the Department of Non-communicable Disease Epidemiology, and the Department of Population Health.

The Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases aims to understand the biology of pathogens, discover and develop a treatment for infectious diseases, and implement interventions for the prevention of these diseases. It includes the Genome Resource Facility, the Wolfson Cell Biology Facility, and the Teaching and Diagnostic Unit. It has around 270 academic staff and 150 research students. 

The Faculty of Public Health and Policy (PHP) aims to improve health in the UK and the world at large by taking into account the medical needs of people in countries at all levels of development. It includes the Department of Global Health and Development, the Department of Health Services Research and Policy, and the Department of Public Health, Environments and Society.

  1. MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM

Established in sub- Saharan Africa by the Medical Research Council UK, the MRC Unit is the largest investment in medical research in a low and middle-income country. It aims to deliver world-leading research to reduce the burden of illness and death in low and middle-income countries. It also works on addressing health issues of priority and trains MRC Unit staff to manage people and resources efficiently.

  1. MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit

It’s a research centre for research on HIV infection and related diseases. Established in 1988, it has a mission to improve understanding and controlling the HIV epidemic in Uganda and around the world. It also aims to contribute knowledge on evolving epidemics, assess health care options, treatment and prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide.

Facilities and Resources

The school does not own its own accommodation, however, it has a limited number of rooms in the University of London Intercollegiate Halls with a range of catered and self-catered accommodation options that can be either studios or single bedrooms. Other accommodation in London options include University (Intercollegiate) Halls of Residence with a number of rooms in College Hall, International Hall, Lillian Penson Hall, and The Garden Halls. University of London Student Homes is also available for LSHTM students managed by the University of London Housing Services (ULHS). As for students with families and children, LSHTM accommodation is available at International Hall, Goodenough College, Nansen Village, and Zebra Housing. As for LSHTM accommodation for couples, it’s available in the International Student House, International Hall, Lillian Penson Hall, and College Hall.
