History & Background

The University of South Wales was established in 2013 following the merging of Glamorgan University and Newport University. In 2013, the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport amalgamated to establish South Wales. Both institutions that have come together to become the University of South Wales have a long and varied history, with each dating back more than 170 years.

Founded in 1841 in Newport city centre, the Newport Mechanics Institute was formed to provide staff and tradespeople with further education. For two shillings per fifth, working men and women were able to attend various lectures to learn subjects such as 'pursuit of attainment and understanding' and 'common superstition '. The university welcomes 22,330 from 122 countries, according to 2018/ 2019 stats.

The University of South Wales has campuses in Newport, Cardiff, and Pontypridd, a public university in Wales. In 2013, the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport merged to form the University of Wales, Newport. The university is Wales' second-largest university in student numbers, offering over 200 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The University of South Wales has three core faculties divided over its campuses.
