Alicante is the capital of eastern Spain’s Costa Blanca holiday region, which is named after the endless sequence of white sandy beaches in this part of the country. The city has all the relaxation and fun of the seaside with the history and sights you’d want from a city break. There’s a medieval fortress towering over the city and a classic Mediterranean old-town with whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets.

With an average of 3,000 sunshine hours a year, it comes as no surprise that Alicante has made its name as one of Spain’s most popular spots for sun-seeking holidaymakers. The city is small, compact, and dynamic. No matter where you are, you are never far from one of its great beaches.

Why Book Student Accommodation in Alicante?

Alicante is a modern, welcoming city surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. The magnificent sandy beaches and blue waters of the coast, sunny weather, rich history, and lovely monuments make it a top destination in Spain. People in Alicante live most of their life outdoors as part of the Mediterranean lifestyle; busy cafés, vibrant nightlife, street markets, and local festivals are abundant.

The city is home to The University of Alicante, whose campus is also one of the most beautiful in Spain with lovely gardens, fountains, palm trees, and modern architecture. You will have the opportunity to study the Spanish language and the complexities of Spanish and contemporary European societies through a wide selection of academic courses, as well as through personal interaction with the host culture. Alicante is home to the “Casa Mediterráneo” which is a government institution to promote mutual knowledge, interaction, and understanding among the Mediterranean countries.

Advanced language students can take academic courses, workshops, and internships at the University of Alicante, providing an unparalleled opportunity for integration. Combine your work in the classroom with field trips, field studies to Madrid, cultural events, and village festivals outside the classroom. All of these factors create a great learning and social atmosphere for international students in Alicante.

Student Life

Is Alicante a good city for students?

Alicante is a perfect city for the students. The city has a bit of everything anyone could need such as shopping centres, cinemas, both private and public hospitals, and rich nocturnal life. The Miguel Hernandez University and the University of Alicante have a lot of local and international students. Also, the diversity of the beaches makes Alicante very popular with tourists, so you will never have to worry about feeling lonely or out of place.

Is Alicante an expensive city?

Not at all, Alicante is quite a cheap city. The flat rentals are very cheap, €200 per person on average. It also depends on where you’ll be staying in the city. The price of food is low. Public transport is also very cheap compared to the average price in Europe. A one-way ticket costs less than €2 and there are discount cards with a special price for students.

Must-Visit Places in Alicante

One of the most amazing places in Alicante is the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. In a commanding position above the town, the castle seems to sprout from a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. The hilltop location on Mount Benacantil is a testament to the castle's military purpose and has been a strategic asset as far back as the Carthaginian era. Originally a ninth-century Islamic Alcazar, the castle was renovated in Renaissance style during the reign of Philip II.

Another amazing place to see is the Museo Arqueológico de Alicante (MARQ). This superb archaeological museum takes visitors on a journey through 100,000 years of history. The collection covers prehistory; the classical period of antiquity with Greek, Roman, and Iberian artefacts; and the Middle Ages.

Finally, in the Barrio Santa Cruz historic quarter (Old Town), you will find the Basilica de Santa María; the oldest church in Alicante which replaced the city's main mosque of the Moorish era. The church dates to the 14th century and was rebuilt by the Catholic Monarchs in the 15th century. On the main front of the exterior, the Virgin sculpture by Juan Bautista Borja stands out as a stunning specimen of detailed stone carving.

Transportation in Alicante

Alicante TRAM can be considered one of the best ways to get around in Alicante. The tram route lines the outskirts of the city and because there are five stops, you'll never find yourself too far from the tram. Lines 1, 3, 4, and 9 will take you where you may need within the city and to some surrounding towns. Prices depend on which zone you're travelling within, but a single-ride ticket can be as low as 1.35 euros (about $1.50). There is also a nighttime tram option convenient for anyone running up late. It runs Thursday through Saturday night in the summer months.

Public buses can also be a solid option for getting around. They run frequently throughout the daytime hours and the fares cost around 2 euros (about $2.25). The many bus routes can also take you out of Alicante city and into smaller towns in the Alicante province such as Benidorm and Denia. The main bus station in Alicante is located near the city centre where you'll find extensive timetables and can hop on any bus you need. If you're in the mood to sightsee around Alicante city, you may also consider the hop-on, hop-off Turibus, which has 10 stops and costs about 10 euros (around $12).

Taxis are another option you can consider. They are not expensive and if you can't find one on the street, you can schedule one using their dedicated app. However, ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft do not operate in Alicante.
