Why Book Student Accommodation in Wrocław?

Wrocław may not be the most popular destination for students, but it will surprise you in every way. It’s not for nothing that many students simply stay there after finishing their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. Wrocław is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe, and that is no coincidence. The numerous water canals, green spaces and thousands of years of history characterise life in the city on the Oder River. With a few other rivers running through the city, not fewer than five, Wrocław gets a unique cityscape similar only to that of Venice. Also, the more than 100 charming bridges and old alleyways in the city centre invite you to take long walks, which is definitely a welcome change from the stress of university life.

Wrocław is not considered the academic centre of Poland without reason. The capital of Lower Silesia has plenty of opportunities with no less than 24 universities and over 400 different courses of study. It is not only the range of courses on offer that attracts many students, but also the attractive admission requirements. Thanks to the good study conditions, it won’t be difficult for you to quickly find your way around the city and the university.

Student Life

Is Wrocław good for international students?

Living and studying in Wrocław is a very rewarding experience, for everything you can learn as well as for the great times you can live there. Wrocław is a city with very affordable prices for students. It is full of young people from all over the world; that is because in the last few years it has become one of the most popular European destinations. The European Best Destinations association chose Wrocław as the best European destination in 2018. The locals are also so kind and friendly, they will always help you whenever you have to ask them for something.

Must-Visit Places in Wrocław

The Market Square and Cathedral Island in the Old Town have to be your priorities, but Wrocław will also reward people who just want to wander and see what they can find. Plac Solny is a delight for its non-stop flower market and has St Elizabeth, the city’s tallest church, with a tower that you can climb if you’ve got the energy to burn. A little way up from there is maybe the best-preserved street in the city; Stare Jatki is in the old butchers’ quarter and has a continuous row of buildings from the 1600s and 1700s.

At 3.8 hectares, Wrocław’s Market Square is among the largest, not just in Poland but all of Europe. Like the rest of the Old Town, the Market Square has almost the same layout as it did when it was planned in the middle of the 13th century. A lot of the architecture, including the rows of colourful tenements that frame the square, needed heavy restoration after the Second World War. The pillory just next to the Town Hall dates to 1492 and had to be pieced back together. This, along with the Zdrój fountain from 2000 and the statue of writer Aleksander Fredro, is one of the three meet-up locations of choice for friends in Wrocław.

To honour the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Racławice, the Lviv-based artist Jan Styka began a 15 x 114-metre cycloramic painting and invited other famous artists of the day to help him complete it. The panorama, riding a wave of Polish nationalism, was a raging success and was on show in Lviv until after the Second World War when it was brought to Wroclaw. Its patriotic subject matter in the days of the Soviet Union meant it didn’t see the light of day until 1985. Since then the Racławice Panorama has been presented at a rotunda in Wrocław, depicting a battle that is engrained in the Polish national memory.

Transportation in Wrocław

There are two main means of transport in Wrocław, buses and trams. The city offers over 60-day bus services and over 10-night services. There are also over 20 tram services available. The bus and tram network allows you to get to any place in the city. The bus and tram tickets are the same; they may be obtained from kiosks, ticket teller machines, Zabka stores, post offices or onboard. There are one ride tickets, that are only valid for one ride – after you leave the bus/tram you need to buy another one to go further. There are also time tickets, that allow you to change buses and trams until the ticket runs out of time. Time varies from 15 minutes to 168 hours (7 days); there are also monthly and yearly tickets. Although there used to be separate tickets for night buses and trams, you can now travel on night buses and trams with regular tickets.

The city also has a bike rental system that you can use. The advantage of the city bikes in Wroclaw is that the rental and return area is really huge. Even very remote parts of the city are connected and it is possible to return the bike almost everywhere. In addition, the first 20 minutes are always free. After the first 20 minutes, you just pay 2 PLN up to one hour and 4 PLN for every additional hour.
