The Royal College of Art is a public research institution in London founded in 1837 in Somerset House as the Government School of Design or Metropolitan School of Design. In 1853, it was expanded and relocated to Marlborough House, then to South Kensington, and now it is located next to the South Kensington Museum. It was renamed the Regular Training School of Art in 1857 and then the National Art Training School in 1863. During the late 1800s, this was primarily a teacher training school. In 1896, the institution was renamed the Royal College of Art.
