History & Background
The Church of England established Canterbury Christ Church College (CCCC) in 1962 to fulfil the requirements of church schools during a period of teacher scarcity. Originally, classes were held at the priory close to St Martin's Church. The Revd Frederic Mason was the school's first principal.
The Privy Council granted the college the ability to offer its own degrees for taught courses in 1995, after which the college's name was changed to Canterbury Christ Church University College. This spelling was used to prevent confusion with an Oxford University institution called Christ Church, Oxford and the University of Canterbury, both of which are located in Christchurch, New Zealand.
In 2005, the institution was given university status, recognising the successful delivery of degree programmes and adopting a new name, Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU).
