History and Background
Anglia Ruskin University’s origins date back to the Cambridge School of Art which was founded in 1858 and became a university in 1992, then it was named after John Ruskin in 2005. The university is located in East Anglia, United Kingdom. A number of colleges and institutes became a part of ARU over the years including the Essex Institute of Higher Education (formerly the Chelmer Institute and the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT). ARU has four main campuses which are Cambridge, London, Chelmsford, and Peterborough.
The Chelmsford campus was originally in the city centre, but then it was moved to a new, purpose-built site in 1992. The Peterborough campus opened in 2011 and it’s a campus dedicated to education, social care, and health. The London campus was opened in 2015 where students study law, business, and finance at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. ARU also has a number of partner institutions overseas and in the UK. In 2014, 12 of ARU’s research areas were ranked as world-leading according to the Government’s Research Excellence Framework (REF).
Faculties and Courses
ARU’s four faculties are Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Business and Law, Health, Education, Medicine, and Social Care, and Science and Engineering. Research Institutes include Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research, Global Sustainability Institute, Policing Institute for the Eastern Region, StoryLab, Veterans & Families Institute for Military Social Research, and Vision and Eye Research Institute. ARU also offers undergraduate courses, postgraduate courses, research courses, continuing professional development courses, and English language courses.
ARU has award-winning facilities that are a result of £115m investments over five years. The School of Medicine’s building has mock hospital wards, specialist simulation rooms, and an anatomy suite. A Science Centre opened in the Cambridge campus with a 300-seat lecture theatre adapted for science teaching, and a raft of specialist labs. Law Clinics were established in Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses which offers students the opportunity to work on real-life cases with qualified solicitors and it also offers free legal advice. Facilities also include SuperLabs, fully-equipped TV studios, a financial trading room, engineering labs, computer gaming suites, paramedic skills labs, mock law courts, library and IT facilities, the Ruskin Gallery, and gyms in the Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses.
Anglia Ruskin University - On-Campus Accommodation (Cambridge Campus)
ARU student accommodation in Cambridge Campus is offered in halls of residence or shared houses. Anglia Ruskin accommodation includes some residence halls on campus and the houses are just a walking distance from campus. House properties include Anastasia House, Peter Taylor House, Swinhoe Hall, and University shared houses. ARU student accommodation is available for full-time ARU students in CB1, The Railyard, Sedley Court, and YMCA. Students can apply to this ARU student accommodation through the Residential Services Office; however, they aren’t owned or operated by ARU, rather by third parties. Nursing, midwifery, or operating department practice students who are studying a course that includes placement will be able to apply for ARU student accommodation at Hinchingbrooke Hospital or Addenbrooke's Hospital.
