Belfast Metropolitan College’s history traces back to the creation of Belfast Municipal Technical Institute in 1906 in College Square East. The Belfast Municipal Technical Institute was established in 1906 at the turn of the twentieth century. The college traces its roots back to that period. It was situated in a grand structure on College Square East that was built between 1902 and 1906.
The college was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize in April 2020, which is a UK-wide award that recognises creativity, ingenuity, and public benefit in work done by UK colleges and universities. It offers a variety of foundation degrees as well as a social work degree. The college has over 170 courses in different fields and levels including A-Levels to Level 5, Foundation, and more.
Belfast Metropolitan College is located in three primary locations: Castlereagh Campus; Millfield Campus; and Titanic Quarter Campus. It also has several smaller centres around the city, such as e3 at Springvale Campus, which opened in 2012. The city centre campuses at Brunswick Street and College Square East were sold when the Titanic Quarter campus opened in 2011. College Square East was made into student accommodation in 2016 at the cost of £16 million. Still, it retains its exterior appearance due to being a listed building.
