It is the county town of Bedfordshire, England, with a population of over 169 thousand. Bedford is known for its unique location on the River Great Ouse, where the Saxon chief officer Beda settled by more than 13 centuries ago. The name Bedford is assumed to have been derived from his name. The city is 60 miles away from London, about an hour-long train trip.

As an international student, you will find major educational institutions, such as Bedford College and Stella Mann College. The University of Bedfordshire, Bedford Campus is only 20 minutes walk from the city centre, with a free bus service for its students. It has parks, cafes, and restaurants around, as well as a Tesco nearby. You will also enjoy having the university's theatre located in a separate building next to the campus, which has a spacious theatre as well as dance studios and impressive social spaces for students.

You'll have the chance to visit The Higgins Bedford, an art museum and gallery that was built by the Higgins family in the 19th century. The exhibitions inside are mostly free and the content differs from paintings and photography to simple drawings. If you'd like to see more of the city's artistic side, the South Bank Arts Centre offers major plays and events held by professional actors and artists worth checking out. Bedford also has historical churches that date back to the 13th century. St. Paul’s and St. Peter’s Churches are the most popular ones.

To get around easily, you'll need to have a public transportation plan, which can be managed through Traveline South East and Anglia. If you'd like to get more information about bus operators, the Bedford Borough Council’s website will be of great help. You can look up bus timetables and maps from the same link as well.
