One-third of the student community are medical students in their three clinical years of training and physiotherapy students in their final clinical year. The university has research groups in a number of areas, including heart disease, indigenous health, infectious diseases, genetics, cancer, biomedical engineering, nursing, mental health, and public health. All of the university’s 14 departments are research active. The university is New Zealand’s longest-established Health Sciences research and teaching institution. Departments and Divisions
The University of Otago has several medical departments. These departments are Māori/Indigenous Health Innovation (MIHI), Anaesthesia, General Practice, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine, Paediatrics, Pathology and Biomedical Science, Physiotherapy, Population Health, Postgraduate Nursing Studies, Psychological Medicine, Radiology, and Surgery. It offers bachelors in medicine and in surgery (MB and ChB). As for the postgraduate opportunities, the university offers plenty of them. Broad areas of study include, but are not limited to, biomedical sciences, mental health, musculoskeletal and pain management, and public health.
