Why Study at the University of Canterbury?
The University of Canterbury (UC) is a public research university located in the heart of Ōtautahi, New Zealand. It was founded in 1873 and is considered New Zealand's second-oldest university. The university is well known for its Engineering and Science programmes. Its Civil Engineering programme is ranked 9th in the world (Academic Ranking of World Universities, 2021). It is recognised by Times Higher Education World University and has a notable place in its ranking yearly. Additionally, it is ranked 258th in the QS World Universities rankings, 2022. It has also been awarded a 5-Star QS ranking for internationally renowned research and teaching. UC is a well-reputed university that hundreds of international students join yearly.
Departments and Divisions
The university offers courses in more than 150 subjects. It is home to seven faculties. These faculties are Arts, Education, Business, Engineering, Health, Law, and Science. The faculty of Arts offers degrees in more than 40 disciplines in humanities, while the faculty of Engineering offers highly-ranked degrees in traditional disciplines and new subjects, like Product Design. In addition, UC's faculty of Law consistently ranks in the top 150 law schools worldwide.
Facilities and Resources
UC has libraries with a huge database that allows students to have access to books, journal articles, heritage materials, artworks, and more. Also, students can find guides on the different citation and reference styles used for UC's various subjects of study at the libraries. Additionally, UC has several research centres like the Artificial Intelligence Research Group and New Zealand Centre for Human-Animal Studies. Also, UC has field stations supporting teaching and research in field work at Cass, Harihari, Kaikoura and Westport. As for the fitness facilities, the university has gyms and the UC RecCentre that offers various fitness classes and options.
