Why Study at Coastal Carolina University?

Coastal Carolina University (CCU or Coastal) is a public university located in Conway, South Carolina, near Myrtle Beach. It was established in 1954 and became an independent university in 1993.

CCU is a national sea-grant institution that owns a portion of Waties Island, an Atlantic barrier island that serves as a natural laboratory for instruction and research. The Horry County Schools Scholars Academy, a high school for gifted students, is also on campus.

The Coastal Educational Foundation, a group of citizens who wanted to establish a post-secondary institution in the region, founded Coastal Carolina University in 1954 as Coastal Carolina Junior College, a two-year community college. Initially, the college operated under contract as an extension of the College of Charleston. Classes met at night at Conway High School and were taught by part-time faculty. Coastal became an independent community college supported by Horry County after its contract with the College of Charleston expired in 1958.

Coastal Carolina University has a total undergraduate enrolment of 9,790 students (fall 2021), a suburban setting, and a campus size of 621 acres. The academic calendar is semester-based. Coastal Carolina University is ranked #38 in Regional Universities South in the Best Colleges 2022-2023 edition.

Schools are rated according to their performance across widely accepted indicators of excellence.

Departments and Divisions

Coastal Carolina University has more than 50 undergraduate majors, and 14 master's programmes, including those in the Wall College of Business Administration, one educational specialist degree programme, and two doctoral degree programmes, are available at the university. CCU also has an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, which offers hundreds of courses at multiple locations throughout the day and evening for community residents to attend. Outside the classroom, CCU students can participate in over 180 campus organisations, play golf at the Hackler Golf Course, or visit nearby beaches.

Admission to Coastal Carolina University is competitive, with a 79% acceptance rate. Half of Coastal Carolina University's admitted students have an SAT score between 1030 and 1190 or an ACT score between 20 and 25. However, one-quarter of admitted applicants received scores higher than these ranges, while the other quarter received lower scores.
