Sydney is located on Australia's east coast, surrounding the world's largest natural harbour and sprawls. It is the most populous city in Australia and Oceania, and it is made up of 658 suburbs, 40 local government areas and 15 adjoining regions. According to the 2014 Mercer Quality of Living Survey, Sydney is ranked 10th in terms of quality of living, as it is one of the most liveable cities and ranked as 11th in the world for economic opportunity. This makes it a popular student destination along with it variety of convenient student homes of all types.  

The city has a humid subtropical weather with warm summers and cool winters, and it also experiences wet and conditions over summer leading to cloudy skies. Higher sunshine levels are detected in winter and spring keeping the conditions cool.

There are many famous student attractions and activities in the city. Sydneysiders privilege from having the Royal Botanic Garden which hosts scientific and leisure activities and is considered as the most important green space in the Sydney region. The oldest public parkland in Australia is Hyde Park in the south of the Domain. It was named after the original Hyde Park in London to honour it.

Sydney houses six public universities: the University of Sydney, the University of New South  Wales, the University of Technology Sydney, Macquarie University, the Western Sydney University, and the Australian Catholic University. Four public universities maintain secondary campuses in the city, the University of Notre Dame Australia, and the University of Wollongong.

The University of Sydney is among the top 50 in the world, the University of Technology Sydney is 193, while Macquarie University ranks 237.

An extensive network of operating modes provides public transport in Sydney through commuter rail, light rail, buses and ferries. Sydney Metro, the new rapid transit line, will run from Sydney's north-western suburbs, pass through the city and then south-west to Bankstown. Its expected opening is in early 2019.
