Must-Visit Places in Münster
Lake Aasee
Aasee, a 40-hectare man-made lake that begins on the outskirts of the old town and continues southwest for almost two kilometers, is only ten minutes on foot from Prinzipalmarkt. The lakefront is protected by a wide swath of appealing parkland, complete with lawns, trees, and public art, and frequented by cyclists, joggers, and families strolling. In the new complex on the north side, there are restaurants and cafes at regular intervals, as well as a raised terrace where you may rent a pedal boat for a self-navigated journey around the lake.
Wochenmarkt Münster
The cobblestones of Domplatz are decked with roughly 150 stalls on Wednesdays and Saturdays for a twice-weekly event that draws visitors from all over the world to Münster. Saturday is probably the busiest of the two days, but you can obtain bread, fruit, vegetables, honey, cold cuts, cheese, pastries, confectionery, fish, oils, and spices on any day. Handicrafts such as wickerwork as well as accessories and clothing are also available for purchase.
Allwetterzoo Münster
The zoo, which includes roughly 3,000 animals from 300 different species, is almost a continuation of Aasee's beautiful coastlines. The term stems from the system of covered walkways that provide protection from the elements in all seasons. Indoor attractions include BioCity, a turtle conservation centre, a research laboratory, and an interactive biodiversity exhibition supplement these outdoor attractions. The neatly constructed Africaneum, for example, has wide panes allowing a privileged sight at gorillas and other ape species, and Allwetterzoo takes pride in how close you can get to its inhabitants.
Botanical Garden Münster
The garden was founded in 1803 as a teaching and research centre, with the first greenhouses arriving a year later. The garden now includes 8,000 plant types, ten greenhouses, and an elegant orangery after 200 years of ups and downs, including the Napoleonic Wars and the Second World War. An original Münsterland farm garden, an arboretum with oak and beech forest, a tropical house with rainforest, a greenhouse with huge Victoria lilies, a nursery, and a zone for plants from Oceania are among the different indoor and outdoor spaces.
Picasso Museum
More than 800 lithographs by Pablo Picasso are on display at this specialized art museum, representing nearly the entirety of his printed oeuvre. The galleries are housed in two historic structures, one of which is the Druffel'sche Hof, which dates from the 1780s and is regarded as Münster's best Neoclassical exemplar. In addition, there are over 137 Marc Chagall prints, 208 Georges Braque prints, and a collection of French artist's books by Matisse, Picasso, and Aristide Maillol.
Münster Transportation
Bicycles are arguably the most common mode of transportation in Münster. Münster is officially Germany's most bicycle-friendly city, thanks to its wide network of bike routes and streets. You can also use local public transportation, the Job- and Semesterticket, vehicle sharing, and the commuter network to get around town in an environmentally friendly manner.
With your Semesterticket, you have free access to all buses in North Rhine-Westphalia. However, there is a cost for traveling on night buses or bringing your bike on the bus. The buses always stop at the central train station, allowing you to connect to other bus routes and trains. You can even use your Semesterticket to travel trains for free in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Semesterticket is ineligible for use on high-speed trains (IC and ICE). The Deutsche Bahn (DB) frequently provides attractive deals that can save you up to 50% off the price of a ticket. Students under the age of 27 can purchase a Bahncard 50 (a 50% discount on all fares) for half the regular price.
