Dún Laoghaire Etymology - Where Does the Name Dún Laoghaire Come From? 

Dún in Dún Laoghaire means fort, and Laoghaire is the name of a 5th century High King of Ireland, he set the site of Dún Laoghaire as a sea base from which to carry out surprise attacks on Britain and Gaul. Therefore, Dún Laoghaire means “fort of Laoghaire”. In 2020, the spelling was reformed to be “Dun Laoire”.
